Prof. Shinya Yamanaka was programmed as the International Symposium's Keynote Speaker to talk about his work. Due to the Eyjafjallajökull eruption European area travel and flights were severely disrupted, resulting in Prof. Yamanaka's inability to arrive in Lisbon from Kyoto at short notice. At the last minute we were able to patch him live from his Kyoto office into the Gulbenkian Foundation Auditorium. where he delivered his presentation and took Q&A, avoiding severe disappointment to the 300 symposium attendees. In this clip, the connection to Kyotos is activated to everyone's relief, and Prof. Yamanaka is welcomed by by esTOOLS Deputy Co-ordinator Prof. Austin Smith (Cambridge University).
Two years later in 2012 Prof. Yamanaka was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.
